Cycling in Chianti: A Loop Tour Along the Route of L'Eroica
Cycling through Chianti is an experience to enjoy at least once in a lifetime—an opportunity to connect with the most authentic soul of Tuscany, shaped by quiet landscapes, gentle climbs, endless vineyards and medieval villages that appear one bend at a time.
It’s no coincidence that this is the home of L'Eroica, the renowned cycling event that celebrates slowness as a value: no rush, a natural rhythm, steady effort and a deep connection with the land.
Riding in Chianti is therefore not just a sporting activity, but a slow, immersive journey that brings together landscape, history, culture and gastronomy.

Cycling in Chianti: White Roads, Vineyards and Timeless Landscapes
The rolling hills of Chianti are one of Italy’s most captivating destinations for cycling tourism, thanks to a perfect balance between scenic paved roads and gravel tracks that disappear into the countryside.
This is a landscape made for cycling, where every route becomes an immersive experience through orderly vineyards and ever-changing views. As you ride, you pass through vines stretching as far as the eye can see, dotted with cypress trees that trace the roads and with farmhouses and historic wineries that tell centuries of agricultural tradition.
The pace is defined by gentle climbs—never overly demanding—and sweeping descents that open up breathtaking views across the hills, offering constantly shifting perspectives.
Iconic Villages Along the Route
Along the way, you’ll encounter some of Chianti’s most iconic villages—well worth a stop:
- Greve in Chianti: often the ideal starting point, with its lively square and cyclist-friendly services.
- Radda in Chianti: a charming, compact medieval centre, perfect for a cultural pause
- Gaiole in Chianti: the beating heart of the Strade Bianche and a symbol of the cycling tradition linked to L’Eroica
- Castellina in Chianti: offering some of the most spectacular views in the area.
In this setting, the bicycle is not just a means of transport—it’s the most natural way to enter the landscape, move through it and experience it slowly, noticing every detail.

A Gourmet Stop: La Bettola dell’Eroico
During the classic Chianti loop, a must-stop in Radda is La Bettola dell’Eroico, a restaurant that tells the story of Italian cuisine through local ingredients, tradition and respect for time.

Created and led by chef Fabio Flagiello, the kitchen is honest and refined, based on fresh ingredients, slow cooking and a deep respect for the territory.

It’s a space that reflects not only the owner’s passion for cycling and travel - you can ask him to organize a bike tour that combines adventure, culture, and fine dining - but also the spirit of L’Eroica itself: slow down and savour every detail—even at the table.
