Summer in Val di Fassa: Trekking and Bike Adventures with a Gourmet Stop at Baita Checco

Summer in Val di Fassa: Outdoor Experiences in the Heart of the Dolomites

There is one particular time of year when Val di Fassa reveals its very best: summer. The meadows glow with vibrant shades of green, the Dolomite peaks appear even more majestic, and every trail seems to invite you to set off with a backpack on your shoulders. Between breathtaking scenery, panoramic lifts and gourmet mountain huts, this corner of Trentino is the perfect destination for those who love an active mountain holiday without giving up excellent food.

There are endless opportunities for trekking and biking enthusiasts who, starting from Ciampedie — the stunning natural terrace at the foot of the Catinaccio massif — can enjoy unforgettable day trips before rewarding themselves with a delicious gourmet break at altitude.

How to Reach Ciampedie in Val di Fassa

The easiest way to reach the mountains is by taking the Catinaccio cable car from Vigo di Fassa, one of the most scenic lifts in the area. In just a few minutes, visitors arrive at the 2,000-metre plateau of Ciampedie, an ideal starting point for hikes and bike tours in the Dolomites.

Those staying in Pera di Fassa can instead use the chairlifts and lift connections serving the Catinaccio area.

Using the lifts allows visitors to experience the mountains without tackling demanding elevation gains straight away, while immediately enjoying the spectacular views of the UNESCO-listed Dolomites.

Trekking in Val di Fassa: Two Classic Routes for Families and Experienced Hikers

From Ciampedie to Gardeccia: Walking Beneath the Catinaccio

One of the classic hikes in Val di Fassa with a stop at Catinaccio, suitable even for families with children, is the circular route combining the Sentiero delle Leggende (Legends Trail) and the Gardeccia Trail. This pleasant walk offers extraordinary views over the Catinaccio, the Vajolet Towers and the Marmolada glacier.

The route is almost entirely flat or gently downhill, winding through cool conifer forests and opening onto remarkable mountain panoramas. Thanks to its wide and compact gravel surface, it is also suitable for trekking pushchairs.

For more experienced hikers, the Giro della Roda di Vael is one of the most rewarding trekking routes in Val di Fassa. Starting from Ciampedie — easily reached by cable car from Vigo di Fassa — this spectacular itinerary requires a good level of fitness but offers unforgettable scenery throughout.

  • Hiking Time (round-trip): 3½–4 hours

Stages of the Circular Route

1. Departure from Ciampedie (2,000 m)
Passing the mountain hut of the same name and heading eastwards, the trail initially descends slightly towards Pra Martin through the area known as “Negritella”. At the gravel road, keep left and follow signs for Rifugio Roda di Vael (Trail 545). The Alta Via della Val di Fassa then continues almost flat across beautiful alpine pastures.

2. Mandra di Vael Plateau
The route gradually becomes steeper. Continue following Trail 545 to reach Mandra di Vael, a perfect resting point at 2,105 metres beneath the Mugoni peaks.

3. Rifugio Roda di Vael
Still following Trail 545, cross a steep scree slope until reaching Rifugio Roda di Vael on the Ciampaz saddle, renowned for its legendary panoramic views.

4. Return to Ciampedie
The return follows the same route back. It is advisable to check the cable car timetable carefully and allow sufficient time for the descent.

Bike and E-Bike Tours in Val di Fassa

Val di Fassa is also a paradise for cycling enthusiasts. From the Ciampedie area, several MTB and e-bike trails wind through forests and alpine landscapes, with scenic routes and forest tracks suitable for different skill levels.

Many bikers choose to use the lifts to quickly gain altitude before enjoying panoramic descents between Vigo di Fassa, Pera and Gardeccia.

With an e-bike, even longer itineraries become accessible, allowing riders to fully appreciate the scenery without excessive physical effort.

Gourmet Stop at Baita Checco

After a morning spent hiking or cycling, the perfect place to experience authentic Ladin cuisine is undoubtedly Baita Checco.

Far more than a traditional mountain hut, it is a refined high-altitude restaurant set within the spectacular natural amphitheatre of Ciampedie. Thanks to its family-run atmosphere and the cuisine of chef Matthias Trottner, Baita Checco has become one of the gastronomic landmarks of Val di Fassa.

Here, local tradition is reinterpreted with a contemporary gourmet touch, using locally sourced ingredients, often from nearby producers. The menu features classic mountain specialities such as canederli dumplings, polenta, mushrooms and alpine meats, all revisited with creativity and elegance. Gluten-free options and a dedicated children’s menu are also available.

One of the most memorable details is the panoramic veranda overlooking the Dolomites — the ideal setting for lunch with a view after a morning outdoors. During the summer months, guests can also enjoy atmospheric mountain dinners by reservation, (read here) reached via the evening cable car service.

Why Choose Val di Fassa in Summer

Val di Fassa in summer perfectly combines everything travellers look for in a mountain holiday: outdoor adventures, spectacular scenery, convenient lift systems and outstanding cuisine. Ciampedie embodies this balance beautifully, offering accessible yet scenic trails alongside mountain huts where visitors can experience the authentic spirit of the Dolomites.

And when the day comes to an end, what remains is that unmistakable mountain feeling: tired legs, cool alpine air on your face, and the irresistible desire to head straight back onto the next trail.
