In addition, arts and culture have always had an important role to play, as Ortisei is the place of work of a considerable number of wood carvers known beyond borders. From this village come important people such as the mountain film pioneer Luis Trenker, the pop music star Girgio Moroder and the successful winter sports athletes Isolde and Carolina Kostner. The real highlight of Ortisei are undoubtedly its mountains: in the north the village is flanked by the Rasciesa which can be reached by a state-of-the-art lift facility, farther in the east the Seceda, reachable via a traditional lift facility as well as in the south the Alpe di Siusi, Monte Piz and Col de Mesdí. A gondola cableway makes the great alpine pastures accessible. The mountains soaring along both sides of the valley are protected and belong to the Puez-Odle and Sciliar-Catinaccio nature parks.
