74 OI magazine CORVARA A sunny village to be discovered Corvara is located in a sunny valley at the foot of Mount Sassongher and can look back on a long and proud tradition of tourism. As early as in the second half of the 18th century, a number of young men from Corvara accompanied the first hikers on their way to the Dolomites peaks. These visitors were mostly natural scientists and geologists from Great Britain who were interested in the Dolomites’ unique nature. The beginning of winter tourism in this area, however, was instigated by the construction of the Col Alto lift, which transformed in 1947 into the first chairlift throughout Italy. Those who love active winter holidays will love this place, with its 130 km of well-groomed slopes. High quality in hotels, restaurants, and services are among the strengths of Corvara’s touristic offers. Gourmet restaurants, pastry shops, bars and pubs, and excellently stocked shops and rental facilities offer first-class services. In winter, Corvara is optimally equipped with a network of modern lifts. Pleasure skiers and families with young children can have fun on many red and blue runs around Corvara. Two modern lifts starting in central Corvara effortlessly take visitors to heights of more than 2,000 metres (6,561 ft). From here the eyes wander over Alta Badia’s Dolomite peaks and reach out all the way to the Marmolada glacier and the peaks of the Austrian Alps.
